get cooking with oil
How a few bucks can save
you a few thousand.
~ By Erich Schmidt, Owner
When was the last time you had your oil changed?
Chances are that question took
you longer to answer than it should have. If so, it’s time to get up to
speed with your engine oil’s viscosity.
Motor oil is the lifeblood of your
car. Within the complex inner workings of your engine lies a tremendous amount
of interlocking, moving metal parts. Between these metal parts there must exist
a layer of oil, lubricating them and ensuring that they work exactly as they
are supposed to. A high-quality oil seals the microscopic ridges and crevices
in the metal, cools hot engine parts and clears away the dirt, debris and loose
metal that can easily tear apart your engine from within.
Without periodic influxes of fresh oil, your engine could be in serious trouble.
As time passes, dirt and debris accumulate, and motor oil inevitably becomes
thick and “sludge-like”. In this state, it becomes infinitely more
difficult for the oil to stick to the metal parts it’s supposed to coat
and even more difficult to clear away the debris it’s meant to eliminate.
The resulting friction and debris can wreak serious havoc and end up costing
you thousands on engine repairs.
The changing temperatures can have a serious effect on the viscosity (thickness)
of your motor oil, as well. Some oil can become very viscous in cold weather,
making it increasingly difficult to start your car during the taxing winter months.
But as is the case with most things, engine damage and trouble can easily be prevented. By being proactive and keeping a sharp eye on your car’s mileage, you can spend around fifty dollars for a healthy engine instead of over $3,000.
The common consensus is that motor oil should be changed roughly every six months or 8,000 kilometers, whichever comes first. Naturally, you can easily obtain precise information on your vehicle’s specific needs by consulting your owner’s manual.
And what’s the easiest way to keep your car running strong? Take it to your trusted dealer, of course. Your dealer knows your car inside and out, and, in under an hour, can drain your old, sludgy oil, and replace it with the fresh, lubricating stuff.
For a few bucks and a few minutes at your dealer’s service department, you can keep your engine running strong for another 8,000 kilometers, and save yourself thousands in engine repairs in the long run.
Pretty slick, eh?
